Background

Riverhead is a town within Suffolk County on the north shore of Long Island. According to the 2010 census, the population reports 33,506 residents. The town resides on the mouth of the Peconic River and is known for its picturesque and sprawling farmland. Riverhead is the agricultural apex of Long Island with 20,000 of the 35,000 acres of the island’s farmland located with the town lines. This town also takes over four separate beaches which are open year-round. If you are accessing Riverhead via boat, you can visit the docks located in Wading River, Iron Pier, and Reeves Beach. Incorporated hamlets include Aquebogue, Baiting Hollow, Calverton, Jamesport, Laurel, Manorville, Northville, Riverhead, and Wading River.

History

Colonists from Europe purchased the “Southhold land” from the local Algonquian-speaking Native Americans and Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1649. The actual town of Riverhead was colonized in 1792 as part of the jurisdictions following the American Revolution. The state legislature divided the town apart from Southold, New York which resides north and east of Riverhead. By 1902, the population of Riverhead was only 2,500 residents.

Because of Riverhead’s rural setup, they are also known for their state parks:

Hallock State Park Preserve: A nature preserve located on Long Island’s north shore with almost one mile of beachfront facing the Long Island Sound. The property that has now become Hallock State Park was used for illegal sand mining during the 1960s and was intended to host a nuclear power plant originally planned by the Long Island Lighting Company. It was purchased by New York State from KeySpan Energy in 2002 for $16 million. This 225-acre park includes woodlands, open areas, passive recreation, fishing, hiking, non-motorized boating, seasonal horse-riding, and scuba diving!

Wildwood State Park:

Includes a sprawling beachfront to the Long Island Sound. The park offers relaxation, a playground, picnic tables, hiking, biking, fishing, a campground for campers equipped with tent and trailer sites, and a recreation program.
